(Summation prepared by Wyatt)

I’d like to thank the Hancock County Arts Council for inviting me to judge the 2020 Will Vawter Exhibition.  I greatly enjoyed my time spent with the artworks on display and took considerable time to make my choices for prize winners.  While my decisions did not come easily, I am confident with my selections and very pleased with what I hope visitors will admire as an exceptional display of Indiana art.

When selecting prize winners for an exhibition, I often narrow the field by first identifying those works that exude confidence.  While seemingly subjective as a parameter of artistic merit, I believe confidence is most exemplified by artists accomplished in drawing, color theory, and composition.  Most often, works that demand my attention have a sureness of mark and design that convince me the artist is working on purpose more than by accident.  It is confidence in subject matter, combined with the obvious mastery of design principles the confidence has grown from, that result in a particular artist’s style.  Style, I believe, is a necessity in the pursuit of art-making over mere craft.

While most of the artworks featured in this exhibition showcase great technical skill, those selected for awards have obvious style.  That is, those particular artists have conveyed in their confidence an ability to make any subject secondary to the way in which they depict that subject.  Rather than merely depicting a landscape, figure, or still-life, they are able to illustrate their unique response to the world around them with style that is unmistakably their own.

Congratulations to the artists, the kind people of the Hancock County Arts Council, and the community of Greenfield.

Wyatt LeGrand
