Steve Smith and Roy Boswell at Vawter 2017

Arts Council President Steve Smith presents the Vawter first-place prize to Roy Boswell in 2017.

On this second Friday opening, see a delightful show by two friends who have painted en plein air together over many years: Roy Boswell and Steve Smith.

One of their earliest sessions took place in front of the pool reflecting a barn on the Smith’s 100-year family farm. Steve graciously hosted these events during the Will Vawter Art Show “paint-outs.”

Roy Boswell is an American Impressionist artist who practices in oil, acrylic and gouache. He does his best to paint everything from a beautiful view of the countryside to a drainage ditch. He credits painting all manner of subject matter, regardless of visual beauty, to his continual learning. Subtle storytelling is something Roy does his best to incorporate into every painting.

Steve Smith took private lessons in oil painting for a short time in the mid-1970s and started painting again after a 22-year break to build a business and raise children. He paints realistically in oils: landscape and still life. Steve has studied at the Indianapolis Art Center, Herron School of Art, Taos Institute of Arts, and the Stutz Art Center. He is a member of Hancock County Arts Council, Indiana Plein Air Painters and Hoosier Salon.
